A GOLSPIE High School student has been praised by Rotarians after she gave an address at their recent meeting on her involvement with the Youth Philanthropic Initiative (YPI).

Members of East Sutherland Rotary Club said Ella Macgregor, a fourth year student, “really made the audience sit up and listen intently”.

Ella Macgregor’s team adopted the charity RASASH when they took part in the Youth Philanthropic Initiative.

Ella took part last term in the initiative – a competition managed and principally funded by the Wood Foundation, which works closely with all participating schools.

Teams of students adopt a charity, research what it does and then promote the chosen group in a speaking competition with the winners receiving £3000 for their charity.

Ella was the lead speaker for her winning team, which adopted the Inverness based charity Rape and Sexual Abuse Service Highland (RASASH).

The organisation aims to provide confidential support for survivors of rape and abuse, their partners and families.

East Sutherland Rotary Club has previously sponsored YHI and invited Ella’s team to attend their meeting.

A club spokeswoman said: “Ella showed herself to be well researched and well informed. She gave an articulate address, so much so that at the end of the talk there was a myriad of questions.

“The meeting turned into an interesting debate on how we and others can support young people in such circumstances. Ella certainly got the message across.”

Since its introduction in 2008, YPI – the biggest independent initiative in Scottish education – has engaged more than 270,000 young people who have taken responsibility for £6 million of charitable giving.
