The two newly installed magic carpets at Cairngorm Mountain were used for the first time at the weekend.

They have been constructed on the lower slopes by the Day Lodge for use for snowsports in winter and by mountain bikers for the new routes to open next summer.

The ski resort opened for the first time this season on Saturday after a fortnight of heavy snow.

Ticket sales were limited to 150 skiers and boarders as the resort continues to gear up its operations.

The magic carpets are designed to make it easier for beginners to get uphill rather than using T-bars and Poma lifts.

Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd chief executive Susan Smith said: "We opened on Saturday and it was a quiet but highly effective day for our customers.

"The magic carpets were a huge success. Sunday was really challenging and we had to close the business due to hurricane type winds and helpfully evacuated the site successfully."

She continued: "Today, we are assessing the damage due to the high winds and we will have a better feel for how the rest of the week will pan out.

"There are mild temperatures for a few days and then cold weather coming in later in the week.

"We really have to wait to see what snow and cold weather conditions are coming in later in the week to make any predictions for the festive season but we remain ever hopeful."
