Sutherland County Committee chairman cllr Richard Gale has released a statement saying Sutherland welcomes visitors.

This is following widespread criticism throughout the county of the behaviour of a minority of motorhome owners and campers who have left behind rubbish.

Mr Gale said that since the easing of lockdown restrictions in Scotland and across the UK there has been a welcome return of visitors to Sutherland communities including those navigating the NC500 route. He is encouraging visitors to be responsible and to be considerate to local people and the unique Sutherland environment.

He continued: “I want to emphasise that visitors are welcome and that most visitors are responsible and considerate but there are a few that give everyone a bad name by not treating the countryside with the respect that it deserves. So the message needs to be widely shared that we expect all visitors to Sutherland to enjoy the wonderful natural resources that are on offer but to please respect the environment and the people who live in the area, after all this is our home.”

Government advice is to book in advance, and to plan out your trip well ahead of time, particularly if visiting multiple locations and to follow the guidance set out in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
