Record sale of feeding ewes and rams at Caithness mart

Caithness, Aberdeen and Northern Marts on Monday sold 3887 prime sheep, store sheep and feeding ewes & rams.

New season prime lambs (614) averaged 236p or £109.53 gross per kg and sold to 252.3p per kg for 43 Texels from Latheronwheel Mains, Latheronwheel and £132.50 gross for a 60kg Texel from Swineyhill, Lybster.

New season prime lambs SQQ up to 45.5kg (238) averaged 237p per kg.

Store lambs (1735) averaged £79.76 and sold to £152 for North Country Cheviot ewe lambs from Balbeg, Mybster.

Feeding ewes & rams (1538) averaged £75.67 and sold to £265 for Texels from Durran Mains, Castletown.

“A fantastic show of quality prime lambs were sold with a very respectable average of 236p per kg or £109.53 gross. Store lambs were short of buyers’ requirements with many top lots selling in excess of the £80 mark. A centre record was broken today with a total of 1588 feeding ewes and rams selling at a very fast rate with sellers returning home delighted.”
