Novel way to grow potatoes with 'Terrace Tattie' crop in Reay
After a raspberry crop died in the recent drought some Reay residents found a new way to make use of the ground by producing "Terrace Tatties".
Veteran volunteer, Henry Henderson, had the idea of growing the crop of super spuds along the roadside verge of The Terrace and was helped to pick them by Reay Youth Club members Taylor and Dylan Forbes – who also delivered a poke of Terrace Tatties to OAP’s along The Terrace and in Beinn Ratha Ct.
Local man Don Forbes said: "Once the winter primroses are planted in a month's time, this will complete the youth club's community project, which went well especially in such a dry year. We would like to thank the other YC members and local volunteers who helped with planting and weeding this road side attraction.
"Encouraging passers-by, whether on foot, driving buses, delivery vans or cars, liked to stop and check out what we were up to. It has been an interesting and worthwhile community project doing something different with a sense of achievement shared by all who passed our way."
Mr Forbes said that the Terrace Tattie pickers' diversification project will help keep the ground free from weeds. Planting some more flowers in a months time will complete the road side project, he added.
