Plans for new housing in two East Sutherland communities are on the table.

Highland Council is looking to provide 21 family homes and two units for older people across two sites in Golspie.

And private company Springfield Properties has lodged a pre-planning notice for a housing development at Dornoch.

The local authority’s housing development officer Helen Cameron gave a presentation to Golspie Community Council at its June 14 meeting.

The Millennium Garden at Seaforth House has been identified as a possible site for bungalows for older people. The garden is no longer maintained.

She said the council had “sketched a lay-out” for 21 units in an area known as the hockey field which would be accessed off South Argo Terrace.

“It’s all family housing bar two units which will be bungalows,” she said. “The others are two and three bedroom homes and one four bedroom house. It’s very much at the sketch stage at the moment.”

Ms Cameron said that also under discussion was the construction of three small bungalows for older people on the site of the former Millennium Garden at Seaforth House Care Home.

She added: “Golspie hasn’t had a lot of development recently, certainly not in the heart of the village. We are trying to do something for Golspie, giving opportunities for people to live in the community.”

Community council chairman Iain Sutherland said he thought the Seaforth House site would be ideal for older residents.

Meanwhile, Springfield Properties has lodged a ‘proposal of application notice’ that it intends building a residential housing development on land at Dornoch north. The number of homes involved has not been made clear at this point.

The firm is set to hold an interactive, online public consultation event next Wednesday, June 30, from 4pm to 7pm. It can be accessed at www.springfield.co.uk/Dornoch

Should the development go ahead, it would be the latest phase in long-standing plans for a new wave of housing, known as the Dornoch North Scheme.

The scheme in its entirety occupies a 29.8 hectare area of farmland on the northern edge of Dornoch.

The ground lies in a triangular wedge between Embo Road to the east, Rowan Crescent and Rowan Avenue to the west and south-west and Cnoc-an-Lobht to the south.

Dornoch Community Council discussed the planned development at its meeting last week

Members noted that the application was a Proposal of Application notice rather than a planning application as such.

However, it was agreed members should attend the online event in order to get a better understanding of the scale of the development.
