A ROSEHALL couple stepped into the breach after the community’s popular quiz nights at the Achness Hotel had to stop during lockdown.

Ashley and Tracey Smith, of Invercassley Cottage B&B, have been hosting virtual monthly quizzes which have been enjoyed not just by local participants but also by people from much further afield.

And the quizzes, the last of which took place on Saturday, have raised more than £700 since November for various good causes including the Scottish Air Ambulance, Rosehall and District Action Group, Rosehall Church of Scotland, the Four Seasons Club (Rosehall) and Highland Hedgehogs Rescue Centre at Brora.

Quiz winners have been awarded gift vouchers to spend at local cafes such as the Pier at Lairg.

Local resident Carol Gilmour said the efforts made by the Smiths both to provide entertainment for the community and to raise funds, had been much appreciated.

“It has been quite a task for the Smiths and they have everyone’s appreciation and gratitude for making it all good fun,” she said.

Nichola Knight, who co-founded the hedgehog rescue centre with her husband Adrian and who relies on donations to run the enterprise, said she had been thrilled at the amount of money they had received.

She said: “We were expecting around £20 and received more than £100. We were blown away – it made such a difference.”
