The size of his initial donation, through his foundation, has not been revealed but is thought to be around £1 million with a commitment to continue backing the fund for several years.

Mr Povlsen is well known for his commitment to rewilding his 18 Highland estates which cover 221,000 acres.

He said: “There is no doubt, that we need to act to preserve our climate, nature and planet. The Earthshot Prize encourages the brightest minds and supports their solutions to the biggest environmental problems, we are facing. We are happy to be among the founding partners.”
