An independent watchdog is to review the police shooting of a 40-year-old man in Inverness.

Police confirmed on Thursday night that the man had been shot during an incident at the city's Polvanie View.

It followed reports of concern for a person and a fire in a residential block of flats.

Police said the man was arrested and taken to hospital with "serious injuries".

Now the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) is to review the shooting.

It is standard practice that any use of firearms is referred to PIRC.

A spokesman said: "We are investigating an incident involving a 40-year-old man in Inverness on March 31, 2022.

"Our investigation will focus on the police contact throughout the incident, with the man who is currently under arrest and receiving treatment in hospital.

"The incident was referred to us by Police Scotland and once our investigation is concluded, a report will be sent to the Chief Constable."
