People in the Highlands asked not to travel today due to low temperatures

Police in the Highlands and Island are asking people not to travel today as temperatures in the Highlands plummet to minus 20.9 in Sutherland.

On social media, officers are advising people who have to make essential trips they must keep updated on weather and road conditions.

A police spokeswoman said: "It is exceptionally cold across the divisional area ( -20.9 in Kinbrace, Sutherland!).

""Please do not travel unless you have to.

If you do have to travel, keep updated on weather and road conditions."
