A LOCHINVER resident hopes to offer visitors to a Sutherland lighthouse a catering service out of a converted horse trailer.

Oliver Appleby of Balchladich is seeking planning permission to site the unit at the public car park serving Stoer Head Lighthouse.

An application for planning consent was lodged with Highland Council last month and is under consideration.

The converted horse trailer would be similar in size – approximately 10ft by 4ft – to a more conventional catering trailer that has already been in use for several years on the site, although under different ownership.

It would be used to serve hot drinks and cold food snacks and would be open from April to October 9am-6pm and from November to March 10am-3pm.

The planning application reads: “There is currently a mobile catering unit on the site which has been serving hot drinks and food for several years.

“The trailer is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing. In the years the catering van has been operating, there have been no known issues or objections.”

The new trailer would occupy a five square metre area of the car park.

Built in 1870, Stoer Head Lighthouse attracts around 10,000 visitors every year. The structure was designed by David and Thomas Stevenson, members of the famous Stevenson family of engineers and chief engineers for the Northern Lighthouse Board.

The lighthouse was automated in 1978.
