Businesses are already indicating an interest in two proposed new units at Dornoch Retail Park, it has been reported.

Developer John Murray has submitted a planning application to site the units at the rear of the existing Spar store run by his daughter, Nicole.

However Historylinks Museum, which is situated nearby and is itself planning an extension, has lodged an objection.

Museum trustees are concerned over the “density and appearance” of the proposed units.

In the light of the Historylinks' concerns, Dornoch Community Council agreed at its November meeting that member Genevieve Duhigg should meet with Mr Murray to discuss his application.

Reporting back to the group’s December meeting, Ms Duhigg said: “The site is actually quite large although it is hard to determine because of the amount of rubbish and overgrowth.

“We did think that Mr Murray is going to have to think quite hard about his exit and entrance to the units and we made that point to him.”

She told the meeting that she felt there was an "opaqueness" around what the park was for – business or retail. There were a lot of retail outlets currently operating there, she said.

And she added: “He (Mr Murray) is very clear that they (the proposed new units) will be business units. He has already been contacted by a chocolate maker and by a nursery/child care provider.”

Ms Duhigg added: “We do very strongly want to have a vibrant business community in town so we should think about how we can help all the business owners down there.”
