Places are still available for an exciting Dark Sky event which is taking place next week in Assynt.

The Dark Sky Evening: Astronomy and Telescope Night is being held next Thursday, November 23, from 6pm-9pm at an observatory newly installed by a Culkein couple in the grounds of their home.

It is being held under the umbrella of the North West Highlands Geopark and as part of the Wester Ross Dark Skies Festival.

Mark Washer and Monica Shaw are making the research grade observatory available for community/educational use.

The couple run an outdoors business, Eat Sleep Wild (eatsleepwild.com), and have launched a website, astronomy.scot. They are ambassadors for the geopark.

In a social media post on the Assynt Activity page Ms Shaw said: “We are so excited to report that the observatory is in! And just in time for our Dark Sky event with the geopark for the Wester Ross Dark Skies Festival.

“There will be opportunities for all kinds of dark sky fun, including telescopes, astrophotograpy, fireside banter, hot drinks and Thankgiving-themed snacks. And, of course, answers to your deepest questions about the links between astronomy and geology.”

Ms Shaw added: “If anyone else is interested in joining along or collaborating on similar events in the future, get in touch. This is just one reason among many to get excited about the long dark winters.
