They are unsung heroes who unstintingly give of their time to help others and expect nothing in return.

Voluntary Groups Sutherland (VGS) have recognised the sterling efforts of volunteers across the county at three evening “Voscars” awards ceremonies held in Rogart, Kinlochbervie and Armadale.

The Voscars 2022 honoured groups and individuals of all ages.

VGS chief officer Christine Ross welcomed the 200 guests who in total attended all three ceremonies, and the awards were presented by Lord Lieutenant Major General Patrick Marriott, who also spoke about the value of volunteering.

Young Highlander Awards were presented to the under 12s and Saltire Awards to those aged 12-25.

There were also Local Volunteer Awards for those of all ages who had been nominated for their outstanding contribution to their communities through volunteering.

Group awards were given to: Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs; Lairg Christian Fellowship; Helmsdale Community Youth Group; TYKES charity shop volunteer team; Brora Village Hub; and Foodshare Shed Volunteers.

Young Highlander Awards were presented to Golspie Primary School Eco Group and Tongue Primary School.

VGS development officers Audrey Parson and Carol Summers spoke at the ceremonies.

Ms Summers said: “When you volunteer you are making a commitment to share that most valuable of resources - your time - to make life better for those who are in need.

“So if our volunteers are good enough to give up their time, it is crucial that we appreciate our volunteers and make sure they have a good volunteering experience whilst with us.”

VGS chairperson, Frances Gunn and vice-chairperson Ellen Lindsay, gave closing remarks and were both “overwhelmed” to see such an emphatic response from the community.

The ceremonies concluded with light refreshments and photographs
