Supporters of Scottish independence turned out in force in Inverness as the Supreme Court ruled Holyrood CANNOT stage another indyref under its own powers.

This morning's gathering was organised by the InverYESs group with members gathering in Falcon Square ahead of the announcement.

There were plenty of banners, Scottish flags, kilts and even a drummer to lend support as the court ruled the Scottish government cannot hold an independence referendum without the UK government's consent.

Graham Bell, from InverYESs, said ahead of the announcement that, whatever the verdict, it was a "win-win" for the cause, adding: "If they say 'no', that's suppressing democracy in Scotland."

Judith Reid said: "They have said no but have we asked the right question.

"If you have to beg to release yourself from a contract what happens then? Are we partners or prisoners?"

Sandra Brown, the area co-ordinator for the north west Highland group of the Scottish Greens, was also at the rally and said: "I think the decision is extremely disrespectful and very worrying for us."

She said that the Scottish Government had done some brilliant things for the country but, following the ruling, its "hands are tied".

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a referendum on October 19 next year but the UK government has so far refused to grant formal consent for a vote as happened in 2014.
