Twenty-two schools from across East Sutherland and Ross-shire took part in a winter series of cross-country events organised by High Life Highland Active Schools coordinators.

Six events were planned over the four months from November to February, but two had to be cancelled due to bad weather and forestry work. The four events that went ahead were held in Inver, Invergordon, Alness and Dornoch.

A total of 568 pupils took part, 290 boys and 278 girls. Each of the schools involved entered eight boys and eight girls in the P4-P7 age group for each race with the final race taking place on Tuesday February 27 at Crawl Park in Alness.

For the girls, Lottie Muir from Craighill Primary School, Tain, took first place in each race. Rory Mellon of Dingwall Primary School won each of the boys races comfortably with Torin Sutherland, Golspie Primary School, finishing second in three of the four races. Medals were awarded to the top 10 runners in each race.

Active schools coordinator Karla Angus said: “It really is amazing to see so many children having fun engaging in physical activity through the winter.”
