“Most Definitely Best Ever” was the widely acclaimed verdict on Brora’s New Year's Day 2023 celebrations, writes Kathleen Cunningham.

Hundreds of locals and visitors gathered on both sides of the River Brora estuary to witness the bonfire lighting followed by an amazing display of fireworks.

Loud cheering and applause acknowledged the efforts of local volunteers who devote time annually to enable the popular event to happen.

One visitor said: "This is absolutely incredible for a small village ..it has the 100 per cent wow factor."

"Muted" fireworks were trialled this year and appear to have worked well – not so many ‘big bangs’ but very colourful.

Volunteers from Rotary East Sutherland and local families were kept busy shaking buckets.

Every penny is needed to keep this annual celebration going and buckets are still in some local shops.

We are fortunate to live in this community. Despite the fact we are all living in difficult times, local residents still appreciate the opportunity to come together on January 1 to share memories, enjoy each others company and give willingly through active support and donations.

The Brora Thrift Shop has supported this event for many years and the Royal Marine Hotel has also made a generous donation.

Brora Community Council applied for and holds the Public Entertainment Licence which the Rotary Club of East Sutherland has kindly funded for three years.

It was heartening to have the younger generation coming more on board this year, so this annual celebration looks to be secure for coming years - it’s future lies in their hands.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2023.
