TWO rusty metal bins, hundreds of glass bottles, four car tyres, two old mattresses and eight rotting pallets were amongst the haul removed by volunteers from a popular Easter Ross recreational area.

As well a boost for civic pride in Tain, the event was good news for wildlife with significant amounts of plastic kept away from waterways.

Some 32 sacks of rubbish were collected from Tain Links during a concerted spring clean involving nearly 30 volunteers on Saturday.

The pick coincided with the Keep Scotland Beautiful Spring Clean and was organised by Nickey Fraser, formerly of the Tain and District Development Trust, and local residents Marc Coombes and Terri Cain.

Local businesses answered the rallying call and supported the event by donating soup, cakes

and fruit for the volunteers.

Highland Council waste services also supported the event.

A cash donation from Tain Pet Supplies meant that Marcia O’Hara, the Easter Ross Ranger, was able to put on activities during the day.

Nickey said: “We had great weather and a fantastic turn out of volunteers of all ages. It was a chance to show people the wide variety of wildlife we have in the area and how important it is to keep this habitat free of litter and stop plastics ending up in our waterways.”
