Heavy showers and blustery winds failed to put a damper on the 2024 Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle and Walk on Saturday.
Some 34 cyclists and 33 walkers from around the north and further afield took part in the annual fundraiser in memory of Durness man Marty Mackay, who died of kidney cancer in 2010, aged just 43.
His mother, Mary Mackay, who organises the event along with family and friends, said the weather made it difficult for those taking part in the 57-mile cycle ride from Lairg to Durness and the 15-mile walk from Rhiconich to Durness.
But despite the challenges, spirits were high and not a single complaint was heard.
One cyclist took part on a penny farthing and was so exhausted that when he reached Durness village hall, he said he never wanted to see it again and donated it to a fundraising auction held that evening.
Another cyclist suffered four punctures - but still managed to cross the finish line at the hall.
Several members of cycle club the East Sutherland Wheelers cycled from Golspie to Durness.
Refreshments were provided along the route, and at the finishing point at the hall, where a variety of home baking was laid out.
Mrs Mackay said: “The Grand Auction raised a record sum of over £5,000 thanks to the generosity of supporters, and the expertise of Stuart the auctioneer who had the crowd going, out-bidding each other. The day finished off with a large raffle.
“The organisers are grateful to everyone who supported the event, a large majority of them turning up every year for what has become a very enjoyable day of catching up with old friends and making new ones.”
A total of £178,669 has been raised for cancer charities since the first event was held in 2011. The amount raised this year will be announced once all the money has been gathered in.
