A week-long fundraising drive at Brora in aid of Ukrainian refugees got off to a good start last Friday evening.
A quiz organised by Alistair Risk and other members of the Rotary Club of East Sutherland and hosted by Brora Golf Club, raised £400.
Club president Andy Stewart and his team of Mike Mackintosh, Roddy Cameron and Ali Dunn came top out of a dozen teams.
The club held its Spring Open on Sunday when a fundraising raffle was run. The club is also making a donation from the Open entry monies.
All funds raised are going towards international disaster relief charity ShelterBox, which is active in Ukraine.
The charity provides shelterboxes, which contain essentials such as tents, bedding, cooking and eating utensils.
A special Service for Peace was held at St Columba’s Episcopal Church in Brora on Sunday afternoon.
And afterwards Mr Risk moved into a tent in the church grounds where he will spend five nights and which will be manned until Friday in a bid to highlight the plight of Ukrainian refugees and drum up further funds.
Anyone passing through Brora is invited to drop in to see him in the grounds of St Columba’s on Victoria Road (the A9 north of the centre of Brora).
Mr Risk has already been visited by East Sutherland and Edderton ward councillor Deirdre Mackay, who made a generous donation, and HE is happy to show visitors his tent accommodation and to take fundraising contributions.
He said: “Thank you to all those who helped and who donated and especially the Episcopal Church and Brora Golf Club for their support.
“We have raised almost £3,000 over the weekend and I know of many donations that will come in over the next few days.
“We have already smashed my target of two or three shelterboxes and It may just be possible that local generosity will see seven or eight shelterboxes heading for Poland and the Ukrainian refugees.”
