Helmsdale Primary School’s Parent council held a fundraising Burns themed evening at the school on Friday February 2.
The event began with a delicious spread of food, put together by members of the parent council. The Wick branch of Tesco donated the meat and vegetarian haggis and Munro Fruit Merchant, Tain, provided a selection of fruit and vegetables. Helmsdale Spar chipped in with Irn-Bru.
Music was provided by former pupils April Sutherland and Oliver Murray, who both played the bagpipes. April also played a few tunes on the whistle.
There was much merriment when a ‘haggis drive’ was in progress- the game was a variation on the traditional beetle drive in which players take it in turns to throw the dice and draw a beetle body.
There were four winners – adults Ina Macpherson and Donnie Murray and juniors Ailsa Shaw and Shay Cowie. There was also a booby prize of a neep for the person with the lowest score!
Headteacher Shelly Taylor said: “The event was a great opportunity for families to get together and socialise. A good laugh was had. Nearly £400 was raised for the parent council fund.
