First Minister Humza Yousaf officially opened the National Treatment Centre – Highland (NTC-H) at Inverness Campus today.
The state-of-the-art centre offers ophthalmology and orthopaedic service to surrounding communities in a purpose-built £48 million facility, which treated it first patient in April.
The First Minister heard from clinical teams and was also able to chat to patients during a tour.
Mr Yousaf said it was making a huge difference to people locally and from across the country.
“The Scottish Government is focused on reducing NHS backlogs built up over the course of the pandemic, and our investment in a network of National Treatment Centres will provide significant additional capacity for orthopaedics, ophthalmic and diagnostic treatment," he added.
“This is the second of four NTCs to open this year – Fife NTC opened in March, with Forth Valley and the second phase of the NHS Golden Jubilee to come. These purpose-built facilities will help to reduce waiting times worsened by the pandemic, so people get the care they need as soon as possible.”
NHS Highland chairwoman Sarah Compton-Bishop said: “We are very proud of the centre. This is a reflection of what today’s healthcare looks like. It is an amazing facility that offers a great environment for our patients and our staff.”
