The Burns celebration in the Old School last Saturday would have pleased Scotland’s national bard himself – the venue was great, the supper fabulous and the speeches tremendous. Ceilidh dancing brought the night to a close.

Host for the evening was Embo native Willie Mackay, who now lives in Caithness and serves on Highland Council representing the Wick and East Caithness ward. He also runs AI Cattle Breeding Service.

Mr Mackay not only recited all 101 lines of Holy Willie’s Prayer, but also joined Rogart Ceilidh Band on the spoons.

He said: “It was a wonderful atmosphere right from the start and everyone enjoyed themselves and gave all the entertainers rapturous applause.”

The Immortal Memory was delivered by Caithness Sutherland and Easter Ross MP Jamie Stone while Cllr Jim McGillivray, East Sutherland and Edderton, toasted the lassies and Andrena Ballantyne gave the reply. David Munro sang Burns’ songs.
