Children from seven primary schools across east Sutherland took part in a ceilidh dancing competition at Brora Primary School last month.

Ceilidh music was provided by Rogart ceilidh band as each school competed in the Virginia Reel, Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow and a waltz.

The event, which was held on Friday March 24, was organised by the East Sutherland Schools Sports Association. Compered by Bob Meeres, who kept the event running smoothly, Louise Meeres assisted with the results table.

Winners of the competition, Rogart – Nixi Mackenzie, Tommy Rooney, Ashley Hargreaves, Donald Barclay, Hugh Mackay, Eleanor Geldard, Hallie Meldrum Butcher and Taya Meldrum Butcher

Judges Marlene and Hugh Munro and Isla Henderson scored the dancers and ward councillor Jim McGillivray was on hand to hand out the awards.

Elissa Stevenson, Active Schools Co-ordinator, High Life Highland, who organised the event on behalf of East Sutherland Schools Sports Association, said: "It was wonderful to see so many pupils attending, along with their teachers and so much family support.

"I know a lot of the pupils were really looking forward to the event. After a gap of a few years, it is so good to have it back as it’s a long standing, popular, event of over 30 years.

"I know the schools have put a lot of effort into practicing for the events, and I’d like to thank the teachers and volunteers who put in the time to allow this to happen."

Runners-up (Bonar Bridge) – Amelie Wojtunik, Hugh Scott, Rory Anderson, Molly McLauchlan, Holly Holden, Kirstin Leonard, Alfie Vetters and Innis MacDonald
