A Stagecoach bus crashed off the road and came to rest teetering on the edge of a steep hill as it was making its way to the Cairngorm ski centre yesterday.

The incident involved the number 31 bus and happened at around 11.45am. Thankfully no-one was hurt.

Startling photographs taken by a family travelling on the bus were sent to the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald, sister paper to the Northern Times.

Guy Kellas, from Edinburgh, was quick to capture the events.

"It followed what seemed like a mechanical failure," said his father, Steve.

"Our family were on the bus and the driver did a great job.

"Through his actions no-one was hurt, despite it being close to tipping over on the edge."

The bus ended up off the road at an extreme angle.

Mr Kellas confirmed: "There was a loud bang just before it – and just to reiterate the driver wasn't at fault and the bang did seem to be something on the bus failing."

Mr Kellas, his wife Caroline and son Guy are regular visitors to Aviemore.

He said: "We all got offered to transfer to a new bus, which arrived relatively quickly, but we were always planning to walk down and so just walked back to Aviemore. We often do this route and walk.

"There were another five passengers on the bus as well.

"We didn't see the bus being picked up but having been back to the site today it has been removed."

The road was closed for a few hours last night to allow for the removal of the vehicle.

Mr Kellas said: "The people on board, as well the driver, were all very calm and helped each other out as it was a little tricky due to the angle. "There was a little concern that it would slip, as it was hard to know at the time how stable it was."

Stagecoach have been asked for a comment and further details.
