There was no rest for Brora Primary School pupils in the run-up to the summer holidays.

Primary five and six pupils spent a day at the Thurso Newton Room on June 17.

Hosted at North Highland College, the Newton Room is the UK’s first Scandinavian-style learning centre and was opened in 2019 by MSP Richard Lochhead in his role as Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science.

Newton Rooms are used to encourage young people to take an interest in STEM subjects -science, technology, engineering and maths.

Brora head teacher Dawn McKenzie said: “The pupils got to be doctors for the day and even dissected a pig’s lung!”

The school entered a boys' and a girls' team into a schools football tournament on Wednesday, June 22, and both scored top placing.

Mrs McKenzie said: “Their coach Fiona Waldron is extremely proud of them all - they practised in their lunch time for a whole month before the competition.”

Then, on Monday June 27, P5 and P6 were off again, this time to Dingwall for a tour of Ross County Stadium and a coaching session. And they were thrilled to be able to sit in the players’ changing rooms.
