It was certainly an invigorating if chilly way to start the New Year.

Eight hardy wild swimmers greeted 2022 by taking an early morning dip in the North Sea at Brora.

The informal outing took place after keen cold water swimmer and paddleboarder Rhionna Mackay issued an invitation on social media on Hogmanay.

Rhionna and business partner Scott Miller set up Sutherland Adventure Company in 2021, offering paddleboard and wetsuit hire as well as coaching at Brora and surrounding areas.

She posted on her Facebook business page: “Want to kick off 2022 in a memorable way? Join us for a swim tomorrow. We’ll be there from 8.45am for a 9am sunrise at Brora beach.”

Rhionna recommended that participants wear a wetsuit and bring something warm to drink once out of the water.

She also reminded anyone interested that it was not a formal, organised event and people were responsible for their own safety.
