Road teams have set up a diversion after flash flooding blocked the busy A9 trunk road in Easter Ross.

A section of the road at Tomich was left completely submerged on Saturday morning after torrential rain hit the area overnight.

Vehicles became stranded in the standing water due to its depth.

Bear Scotland, which manages the local trunk road network, said it had been working with police, Highland Council and others to put a diversion route in place.

This will take motorists along the B817 road that runs past Alness and into Invergordon, following the coast before emerging back onto the A9 at Kildary.

However, in an added wrinkle, another part of the B817 west of Alness has also been closed to traffic due to the deluge.

Highland Council confirmed that this road had been rendered impassable between the Skiach services and the Westford Roundabout at the western end of Alness. This closure does not affect the A9 diversion.

And these were not the only roads forced to close due to particularly heavy rain in Easter Ross, with the coast round linking Dingwall to the Ardullie Roundabout at the northern end of the Cromarty Bridge also falling foul of localised flooding.

Elsewhere, Highland Council has advised motorists to use caution on a number of routes where standing water was a problem. These include the A862 between Marybank and Muir of Ord.

There has also been flooding on the A834 at Blairninich near Strathpeffer.
