People in the Highlands are being invited to join in a UK-wide round of applause tonight to honour NHS staff working hard through the coronavirus outbreak.

The Clap for our Carers campaign is asking for as many people as possible to clap their hands together at 8pm to thank all doctors, nurses, carers, GPs, pharmacists and other NHS staff.

People can take part in the national salute from their gardens, front doors and balconies to show their support.

High-profile figures who have pledged their support to Clap for our Carers include Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, TV presenters Chris Moyles and Kate Garraway, David and Victoria Beckham and Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

Organisers of the campaign which started online say during these unprecedented times NHS staff need to know the public is grateful.

Citizens on lockdown in Spain and Italy have already held similar displays of thanks for medical staff, applauding and cheering from balconies and windows.
