Over £5000 raised in 'lighthouse' run

An Essex man has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from local people during his fundraising run this week along the north coast from Cape Wrath to Duncansby Head, Caithness, "lighthouse to lighthouse".

Graham Biner, of Rayleigh, set out from Cape Wrath, the most north westerly point in the UK mainland, on Sunday and was expected to complete the 122-mile run and reach Duncansby Head, the UK’s most north easterly point, later today.

The 39-year old named the run "Liz’s Lighthouse Challenge," in memory of his late wife who died from breast cancer in September last year. Proceeds from the challenge are to go to Essex based charity, Havens Hospices, which provided support for Mrs Biner during her illness.

Mr Biner chose the North of Scotland as the location for his run because he and his wife had fallen in love with the area during previous visits. Prior to setting out on the run, he said: "Not only is it a breathtakingly beautiful country, but the people are so friendly and welcoming too."

Speaking earlier this week, a member of Mr Biner’s support group, Liz Mulloy, said: "The support Graham has received from people along the route has been humbling and outstanding. He has had cheers of encouragement, cash donations and heated blankets. He has also exceeded his aim to raise £5000 for Havens Hospices with a running total of £5361.

Ms Mulloy revealed that energetic Mr Biner had even swum the Kyle of Durness, with the support of local men James Mather and Allan Andrews.
