Space company Orbex, which is developing and will operate Sutherland Spaceport, has launched its annual internship programme.

The company, which has its headquarters in Forres, is looking for five new interns to support a team of experts working to launch rockets carrying commercial satellites into space from the north coast spaceport.

Orbex says that the programme offers a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for STEM students to gain hands-on experience in Scotland’s space sector as the company develops its Prime rocket and Sutherland Spaceport.

The roles will span multiple areas of the business, offering interns the opportunity to support work on the rocket’s design, data and software, electronics and testing.

Ruairidh Green, from Elgin, joined Orbex’s 2023/24 internship programme as an assembly, integration and test (AIT) intern.

He said: “While studying physics at the University of Glasgow I was looking to get my teeth into professional work.

“When I saw the Orbex’s internship programme advertised last year, I didn’t hesitate to apply. Everything I have learned from the Orbex team has been invaluable.

“I’d really encourage those looking to learn new skills and the process behind developing a space company to apply.”

Phillip Chambers, chief executive of Orbex, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for young people to learn from our team of experts and gain experience working on different aspects of the rocket.

“As we progress towards the completion of Sutherland Spaceport and Orbex Prime, heralding our first launch, we are entering our next phase of growth.

“It is a hugely exciting time to be joining Orbex and we are looking for some of Scotland’s home-grown STEM talent to be part of our journey to launch into orbit.”

The available roles in the 2024/25 programme are:

Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) Internship
