OVER 100 places in the Highlands have been put forward for a 20mph speed limit. A total of 165 existing 30 mph speed limits across the north were assessed with 114 sites recommended to be part of Transport Scotland's National 20 mph Implementation Strategy.

Highland Council's chairman Chair of the economy and infrastructure committee, councillor Ken Gowans said: "I’m delighted that following the completion of assessments set against specific criteria we are in a position to put forward a recommendation that 114 locations have 20 mph speed limits.

"Having so many 20 mph limits introduced simultaneously is going to bring health benefits, community benefits and safety benefits.

"This is a very ambitious project. The 114 sites equate to 590kms of road network. We intend to have all preparation work completed as soon as possible so all of the 20 mph sites can be operational by next summer."

The set assessment criteria for the sites can be found in the Economy and Infrastructure Committee paper https://www.highland.gov.uk/meetings/meeting/4684/economy_and_infrastructure_committee

All costs of the roll out to the council will be fully funded by Transport Scotland. This will include arrangements to carry out post implementation speed surveys and publishing data from all sites on a dedicated webpage.

Once Transport Scotland have confirmed the council’s proposals, details of where the 20 mph roll outs will be located will be provided and promoted on the the local authority website.
