Volunteers at the Highland Cross were disappointed that a vehicle was left parked in Beauly village square less that 15 metres away from where cyclists crossed the finishing line of the 50-mile duathlon from Kintail to Beauly.

Organisers said signs had been posted in the run-up to the event not to park their vehicles within the parking area at the square for the safety of 795 athletes who were due to cycle into the village.

The car was a major hazard to cyclists riding across the finishing line, with volunteers having to guide and warn participants about the danger to avoid any accidents.

No accidents were reported as a result of the parked car as of 4pm on Saturday afternoon, with organisers believing the vehicle belonged to one of the participants in the Highland Cross.

However, event organisers and volunteers were left powerless to remove the car from the area.
