Michael Robin Dimmer (Mike) was a true gentleman, great neighbour and friend. He could turn his hand to anything and was always happy-go-lucky, no matter what.

With his flowing beard and long, pony-tailed hair he was a distinctive figure, and a familiar sight walking the road from Fleuchary and Dornoch with his beloved dog to get his weekly supplies.

He would always end up in the Dornoch Inn for a few pints and the odd gin or two, invariably managing to get a lift home from one of his many friends.

Mike was the life and soul of any gathering with his quick wit and banter. He last visited Dornoch 10 days or so before he passed away on September 24, aged 80.

A qualified electrician, he spent many years in the London area and was at one time employed on a nuclear submarine as well as behind the scenes with the BBC.

His career as an electrician saw him work on programmes involving big stars such as Spike Milligan and the great double act Morecambe and Wise.

Rather than working backstage, Mike should have been performing with Morecambe and Wise. He could have made it a treble act - that would have been something else!

He was married to Jean Ross, daughter of Donnie (Donlie) and Ina Ross, with whom he had three daughters, Samantha, Kerry, and Zoe who also have family. Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his expanding family.

Mike and Jean moved back to Fleuchary from London in 1981 after Jean's parents became ill.

As an electrician, his skills were in demand, but he was able to turn his hand to anything. You name it, Mike could do it – joinery, plumbing, tattie lifting. He helped the Munro family with the lambing at Cyderhall Farm for many years.

Mike and Jean very kindly allowed many individuals to graze their horses at 194 Fleuchary over a long period of time. He was more than vigilant about their welfare, more than often having the horses fed and watered long before their owners’ daily checks.

He will be sorely missed by his close family, to whom we all offer our heartfelt sorrow and condolences. He will also be sorely missed in Fleuchary, Birichen, Rearquhar and the wider parish of Dornoch as a character and a half, a friend and the best Englishman ever to have settled in our local community!

His cremation service, conducted by celebrant Halde Pottinger on October 5, was well attended by family and there was also a large turnout of his many friends from the Dornoch area.

Mike was into sea fishing so at his request, donations were to RNLI, Invergordon.
