Oatcakes, shortbread, beanie hats and a pipe band: Scottish Ukrainian evening at Golspie is a rousing success

A SCOTTISH Ukrainian evening held at Fountain Road hall, Golspie, on November 19 was a rousing success.

The event was initiated by local resident Lesley Cranna who is involved with Ukrainians learning English at Brora Learning Centre.

Lesley co-hosted the night along with Ukrainian translator Kseniya Andre.

Ukrainians and their host families living in the far north, from Caithness to Tain, were invited and around 40 Ukrainians attended along with 60 others.

Both Scottish and Ukrainian food was made by locals and refugees. Oatcakes and shortbread were donated by Ben View Stores, Golspie, and cheese by Highland Fine Cheeses, Tain.

Ross County Football Club donated beanie hats for the Ukrainian children and tickets to Ross County v St Johnstone next month.

Lairg Gaelic Choir and well-known local singer Geordie Jack provided entertainment as did Ukrainian saxophonist Vadym and fellow national Sonia who read a poem.

There was a poignant moment when everyone stood for the Ukrainian national anthem, beautifully sung.

The guests were thrilled by the arrival of Sutherland Caledonian Pipe Band – there was huge excitement and much taking of photos!

To round off a wonderful night, there was Scottish dancing to Strathfleet Buttons and Bows and a group of Ukrainian girls performed their own dance.
