North West Sutherland Schools Group headteacher ‘over the moon’ at permanent appointment

An acting headteacher at a campus in north-west Sutherland has said he is “over the moon” his appointment has been made permanent.

John Naples-Campbell announced on X, formerly Twitter, last Wednesday that his temporary role had been made permanent.

He said: “I am over the moon today to have successfully been appointed as permanent headteacher of our amazing North West Sutherland Schools Group! I started crying when I was told. What a journey!”

Mr Naples-Campbell was appointed as the new acting principal of the campus in June last year.

The North West Sutherland Schools Group comprises Kinlochbervie High School and its feeder primary schools at Kinlochbervie, Scourie and Durness.

Mr Naples-Campbell succeeded Graeme Smart who retired after 13-years at the remote, 30-pupil Kinlochbervie High School.

He brought with him a weatlth of experience in education to the post. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was educated at Queen Margaret University College and the University of Edinburgh.

He has worked in various local authorities teaching drama and performing arts and was also a lecturer in performing arts at Edinburgh College where he secured Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson as their patron.

Mr Naples-Campbell helped to develop staff teacher training in inclusive LGBT education.

He was the first educator in Scotland to be awarded professional recognition in Equality and Diversity (LGBT) from the General Teaching Council.

In 2021 he won the Educator of the Year Award category of the National Proud Scotland Awards.

Throughout his 19 years of eaching he has made it his mission to ensure every classroom is a safe enviornment, regardless of gender or sexuality.

A post on the schools group’s social media page states: “We are all delighted to announce that Mr Naples-Campbell has been appointed as our permanent head teacher.

“All staff and pupils look forward to our new term and lots of exciting new opportunities in the months and years to come.”
