Last year East Sutherland Camera Club decided to move from its long standing base in Brora to Dornoch and start again in the Dornoch Community Centre after the disruption of the Covid years, writes club secretary Andy Kirby.

Fortunately many long standing members accommodated the move and continued to be active. Additionally Dornoch proved to be a good recruiting ground, the club has gone from strength to strength and membership is drawn widely from East Sutherland and Easter Ross.

September 12 marks the start of the new season for the regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month when we will welcome Owen Cochrane, president of Inverness Camera Club who will give a double presentation.

It could be said that he will be blowing hot and cold, but not literally, when he gives illustrated presentations on his two recent photographic trips, one to Chobe River in Botswana and the other to Iceland. The meeting starts at 7pm and new members are welcome to attend.

The regular meetings include monthly themed photographic competitions and talks by club members as well as visiting photographers.

There will be two sub themes this year: getting more out of your smartphone and making your images more meaningful and impactful.

In addition this year we plan to provide training in camera skills over Zoom on alternative Tuesdays. These will include topics such as mastering exposure, capturing motion and long exposures.

Photographic field trips are arranged with tuition when required to locations in the area as well as day trips further afield to the west and north coasts. The club is also active in providing photographic support for local events such as the Sutherland Show.

This year the club is pleased to be hosting the Highland Challenge which is an annual photographic competition and day event for camera clubs in the north Highlands.

The club is looking for new members and all are welcome to come along and sample the first month without commitment. No fancy kit needed, just an interest in taking photographs. So why not come along and give it a try?

The club website is www.eastsutherlandcc.org.uk where nest season’s full programme will soon be available and where membership enquiries can be made.
