THREE magical new shows, covering Scottish adventure, powerful poetry in motion and dream-making dance, are heading for His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen.
The Scottish theatre company Sell A Door will bring adventurous drama to the city centre theatre in June with Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale Kidnapped, the story of Davie Balfour as he survives shipwreck and murder to dramatically escape to the Highlands.
Adapted by Ivan Wilkinson, Kidnapped is a gripping, fast-paced adventure story set against the fierce social and political backdrop of 1750s Scotland and is ideal for family audiences aged six upwards.
Later in the year, the Scottish Ballet is to stage two new shows at HMT as part of its autumn season, bringing together the stylistic language of American playwright Arthur Miller and Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in a powerful study of words in motion in The Crucible and Ten Poems in October.
Based on Miller's 1953 Tony award-winning play The Crucible, Canadian choreographer Helen Pickett translates this incredible dramatisation of the Salem witch trials with her inimitable style of dance language.
Christopher Bruce's Ten Poems was created for Ballet Keil (Germany) in 2009.
Set to a recording of 10 Dylan Thomas poems, emotively read by Welsh actor Richard Burton, Ten Poems builds on the melodic rhythm of the famous prose, and Bruce, one of Britain's most prolific and important choreographers, brings each one to life with exquisite little vignettes of story and character.
And the Scottish Ballet will be back in Aberdeen next January to stage Peter Darrell's magical world of The Nutcracker, re-imagined by Olivier Award-winning designer Lez Brotherston.
Crafted for Scotland by Scottish Ballet's founding artistic director over 40 years ago, The Nutcracker is full of magical memories, telling the story of young Clara who falls asleep after a fun-filled Christmas party full of magic and celebrations and dreams that she helps the Nutcracker Prince defeat an army of giant mice.
Kidnapped runs from June 3-7; The Crucible and Ten Poems will be performed on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 7 and 8, and The Nutcracker follows on January 14-17, 2015.
