PAWS, the Glasgow three-piece with its roots in Ross-shire, has been shortlisted in the Best New Scottish Band or Solo Artist category of the Scottish Variety Awards.

Both frontman Phillip Taylor and drummer Joseph Swinney were brought up in Tain and Taylor has said growing up in the town has influenced many of his songs.

Together with most recent addition to the band in bass player Ryan Drever, Taylor and Swinney will release their debut album this year, which they recorded in New York for Brighton-based Fat Cat Records.

Also nominated are Americana duo Raintown, who appear at Hootananny’s Ceilidh Bar in Inverness on Thursday 14th February, X-Factor contestant Melanie Mason, Fridge Magnets and The Merrylees.

The winner of this and the other categories in this year’s Scottish Variety Awards will be decided by public votes online at http://www.capitalfm.com/scotland/events/scottishvarietyawards2014

Voting commences on Monday 3rd February and closes on Friday 7th March at midnight.

The winners will be announced on Saturday 22nd March at an awards ceremony at the Glasgow Crowne Plaza.
