Mystery of gold ring found at Dunnet Forest
Mystery surrounds a gold ring found in a kindling bag at Dunnet Community Forest (DCF) and how it got there.
In a social media post on the DCF Facebook page a Trust member told of the find.
“Found in a kindling bag returned to us at the log sale – one very old and worn 9ct gold ring. It must have slid off a finger when someone was getting out kindling and not noticed when the bag was refilled.
“It looks like it might have been a man's ring judging from the size.”
Sheona Scatchard from DCF said that the Trust did not want to reveal some vital details of the ring to make sure it went to the rightful owner. She shared a picture of the ring that omits certain identifying features which only the original owner would know about.
“It does have a distinctive design often used for rings for men and more rarely women,” added Shona.
“We often find surprising things left behind in the forest like single wellingtons or a car seat.”
The gold ring was found during one of the Trust’s log sales which take place monthly throughout the year apart from August. Despite the Facebook post going out on April 14 and being shared over 240 times, the ring has yet to be claimed.
“It must have slid off someone’s finger unnoticed as they reached in for wood to light their fire. Then the bag was returned to us to be refilled and the ring was found by the next person who bought it.”
