Highlands and Islands MSP Edward Mountain has praised the conservation and education efforts of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland following a visit to Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig.
He was met by Ben Supple, director of engagement and business development at RZSS, who highlighted the progress being made on the Saving Wildcats project and also explained the park’s plans for a new Discovery Centre.
Mr Mountain said: “I was delighted to visit the society’s wildlife park and learn more about the charity’s conservation, education and engagement work.
“In particular, I commend the efforts of everyone involved in the Saving Wildcats partnership project. Serious progress is being made and it is clear that we are now at a key point in efforts to save the wildcat population.
“I am pleased to hear that by 2023 it appears that through the hard work of RZSS and partners we will be in a position to see wildcats being released into the wild.
“This is a long-term project which offers the opportunity to restore an iconic species in Scotland which is on the brink of extinction.
“During my visit I was also pleased to learn more about the park’s exciting plans for a new wildlife discovery centre.
"If these plans are approved, then this project promises to make the park a world-class attraction in the heart of the Highlands for years to come.”
Mr Supple said: “The Saving Wildcats partnership's a very exciting project. While releasing carnivores to the wild is incredibly complex, plans are progressing to release the first wildcats in 2023.
“We are also thrilled to be developing plans for a discovery centre which can play a vital role in inspiring people and communities to protect and connect with nature and wildlife.”
