Graham Finn from Dunbeath has penned his first book thanks to a local creative writing group and his subject of fishing seems particularly appropriate given his surname.

Independently published on January 29, the book is called 'Life isn't Always About Fishing' and is now available to buy on Amazon.

Graham said that Dunbeath and District Centre's community health and wellbeing hub provided the impetus for his new venture thanks to a creative writing class run at the centre.

He said: "I retired in December, well tried to, and I have been attending a creative writing group at the Dunbeath wellbeing centre.

Graham Finn said he was known as 'Fishy Finn' at school and has now published his first book on fishing.

"The course is run in a very relaxed and friendly way by Patricia, and she has brought out my imagination that I never thought I had. Most weeks she gives us all a line, a subject or something similar to write about and it has been great fun."

Graham says that there are seven people who regularly attend the creative writing classes run at the centre by Patricia Heath who also has a background in fishing having been a champion angler.

"I've been a fisherman all my life and for some time a level two angling coach trying to get as many people into the sport as I can," he adds.

"For many years I've been making and selling fishing tackle but now I am slowing that down. My writing hopefully reflects some of my fishing tales and a lot more besides.

"In the book there are local mentions such as Dunbeath, Scrabster and Freswick, and I think there is something in the book for everyone to enjoy – I had fun writing it and I hope it comes out in the stories."

Graham Finn's new book is available on Amazon priced £5.99.

Graham lives in Dunbeath at an area called Rock Head which he describes as "pretty rural but like most of Caithness very beautiful".

"And I am already working on my next book – thank the Lord for spellchecker!"

The new author was asked about his surname and how it coincidentally relates to his pastime of fishing. "They called me Fishy Finn at school and said I must think like a fish. My name has been an asset in my fishing career – I even have a trademark name, Fish With Finn, that always causes a bit of a laugh." He agreed that the name would provide a great 'hook' for the headline.

Graham Finn also sells fishing tackle and can be contacted at: fishwithfinn@btinternet.com

Life isn't Always About Fishing is available at: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CTK8RL63
