A well-known East Sutherland charity is moving into new premises.

The Young Karers East Sutherland (Tykes) has been quartered at Sutherland Estates’ offices in Duke Street, Golspie, since its inception in 1999.

But it is now making a new base for itself in units – just vacated by Golspie Gallery – at the village’s industrial estate.

Tykes aims to support children and teenagers in Sutherland who live with someone with a health condition. More than 100 young people currently benefit from the service.

The group provides breaks for young carers and raises public and professional awareness of their needs.

Tykes chairman, Major General Patrick Marriott, has thanked Sutherland Estates and Lord Strathnaver, who is a patron of the charity, for their support through the years.

He said: “Without the Duke Street offices and the initial and continuing kindness, I am not certain that Tykes would exist today.

“We are hugely, hugely grateful. Lord Strathnaver remains a patron and we hope that close relationship will continue for many years to come.”
