MORE than half-a-million people travelled on Scotland's trains at the weekend – making it the busiest weekend not just of this year but also the busiest Sunday since 2015.

A combination of summer holidays and major events ensured there were bumper numbers of people on ScotRail services – with the likes of the UCI Cycling World Championships, the Edinburgh Festivals, and the Scottish rugby team’s match against France all taking place.

Some 197,000 journeys were made on Sunday, with 327,000 on Saturday.

The numbers are a positive sign for the rail network, which has been slowly trying to claw back the passengers it shed during the Covid-19 pandemic travel lockdown.

Phil Campbell, customer operations director at ScotRail, said: “We are absolutely delighted to see how many people used our services over the weekend. We made significant improvements to our services... running as many trains as possible, with extra seats added to help where they were needed most.

“Although our trains were busy, and stations busier than normal, our staff did a fantastic job to help, and keep people moving.

“With the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships continuing, and the Edinburgh Festivals in full swing, we are looking forward to more people travelling with us for these events in the coming days.”
