SSE Renewables' £4.89m donation to Highland communities

SSE Renewables donated £4.89m to 208 local charities and community groups across the Scottish Highlands in the last year, once again demonstrating the local commitment the company is showing to Highland communities.

The contribution is revealed in SSE Renewables’ 2022/23 Community Investment Review published today.

SSE Renewables is Scotland’s largest renewable energy developer, owner and operator and was the first to make a commitment to invest its profits back into local communities. For 20 years, the company has worked with local communities to fund legacy projects which make a lasting difference to the local area.

Managing director Stephen Wheeler said: “SSE Renewables is committed to investing in Highland communities. We believe that renewables should provide value for communities, and we are proud we re-invest into local areas.

“The communities of the Highlands continue to show that local decision making provides the best legacy from renewables and we are pleased the projects will make a lasting difference.”

SSE Renewables’ Sustainable Development Fund made its largest award of £1m to support the Highland Energy Efficiency Programme, which provides energy efficiency measures including solar, battery, air source heating and insulation to households in extreme fuel poverty.

The support will enable 250 households to have warmer and more efficient homes.

Councillor Raymond Bremner, leader of Highland Council, said: “The Highlands is experiencing some of the highest levels of fuel poverty in Scotland. We are delighted by the grant support from SSE Renewables which will help us deliver efficiency savings to those households most in need.”
