This year’s eco committee at Melvich Primary School and ELC decided to continue the school’s tradition of celebrating the festive season in an environmentally friendly way.

Instead of exchanging Christmas cards with one another, which the committee calculated would amount to more than 1600 cards, the pupils were invited to send just one card to the whole school and to make a donation to a charity.

The charity chosen by the committee was the Rock Trust, which is based in Edinburgh and seeks to support homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25.

Committee member Matthew MacKintosh (P6) said: “Around Christmas and winter it’s very cold. We thought it would be good to help out homeless people.

"The Rock Trust helps young people who are struggling and have no-one else to help them."
