A SHERIFF has ordered background reports to be prepared on a Brora man who behaved in a threatening manner towards his partner and caused damage to a home in the village.

Sheriff Gary Aitken said he wanted a Criminal Justice social work report to be drawn up before passing sentence on Stephen Sutherland, Fascally Cottages.

Stephen Sutherland appeared at Tain Sheriff Court on Monday.
Stephen Sutherland appeared at Tain Sheriff Court on Monday.

The 27-year-old appeared at Tain Sheriff Court today to admit the incident at an address in Victoria Drive on March 20.

No Crown narration was given in court because of the sheriff's decision to defer the case.

However the charge to which Sutherland pleaded guilty. stated that he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm.

Sutherland shouted, swore and uttered offensive remarks towards a woman and also shouted and swore at a teenager who was in the property at the time.

He went on to 'adopt an aggressive demeanour' and pull a curtain pole from a wall at the address and damage a door by repeatedly kicking at it.

He also kicked at a glass mirror, causing it to smash.

The charge states that Sutherland, who has previous convictions, was on a bail order at the time the incident happened.

Sheriff Aitken told him: "Given the nature of the offence and your record, I am deferring sentence for a Criminal Justice social work report."

The case will call again on November 16.
