An art competiton for primary school pupils in Sutherland has been launched to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III and the Queen Consort on May 6.

The voluntary contest involves the majority of primary schools in the county and is being organised by Sutherland Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Marriott and the Lord Lieutenancy team.

The Primary Schools Coronation Art Competition has two themes– the Crown in Scotland and the natural environment in Sutherland.

Major General Marriott said: “It’s a fun competition to mark a historic event through art and we would encourage all primary school age pupils in Sutherland to take part.”

The Lord Lieutenancy team in Ross-shire is running a similar art competition in parallel with the one in Sutherland.

The contest is being split into three categories – nursery, primaries 1-3, and primaries 4-7 – with pupils given a choice of two themes – the Crown in Scotland and the natural environment in Sutherland.

Entries should be on A4 paper and in any medium.

Major General Marriott said the deadline for entries was Friday, April 21, with a judging event taking place at Lairg Community Centre from 10am-1pm on Wednesday, April 26.

Each school will have one winner from each age category and headteachers can make up to six ‘special awards.’

Winners will receive certificates, rolled up and tied with a Sutherland tartan ribbon.

Major General Marriott said: “The certificates will be presented in school assemblies in June either by myself or a local Deputy Lieutenant. All schools taking part will also receive a special commemorative certificate.”

And he added: “The best overall entry from Sutherland will be sent to the King.”

Highland Council education committee chairman John Finlayson encouraged pupils to take part, saying: “This competition is about coming together and enjoying creating something special to mark a moment of history.”
