Long-established trees at a north-west Sutherland car park have been removed on road safety grounds, the chairman of Assynt Community Council has said.

Liam Taylor revealed at the group's meeting last week that a number of people had expressed upset over the felling of the larches near the car park at Inchnadamph, along with surprise that no consultation had taken place.

"There were a few people against it because they were well-established trees and some folk felt sentimental about them," he told colleagues.

Mr Taylor added that the location of the trees meant they were the responsibility of Highland Council's roads department.

"It was a road safety issue that prompted the removal of these trees," he explained. "And because it was a road safety issue, there was no need for consultation."

Community councillor Alex Dickson queried whether the timber could be retained for the community.
