The new owner of Carbisdale Castle says she hopes to “breathe new life” into the historic building as well as create jobs and invest in the local economy.

The 20-bedroom mansion near Ardgay has been sold to London barrister and property tycoon Samantha Kane, it was officially announced today.

Ms Kane purchased the property earlier this year but has only now been revealed as its new owner.

She said she had been drawn to the “castle’s splendour, as well as its impressive historical background".

Carbisdale Castle was built in the early 1900s as a residence for the widowed Duchess of Sutherland but has had a number of ownership changes since.

“I felt a sense of kinship with its original occupant the Duchess of Sutherland, whose story I find fascinating,” said Ms Kane.

“My vision is to breathe new life into Carbisdale and ensure that its incredible historical value can co-exist alongside new contributions to the prosperity of the local area.”

Ms Kane has said she has extensive renovation plans.

A Press statement issued on her behalf reads: “Samantha intends to invest in the local economy through the creation of jobs, both in the castle itself and in its surrounding estate, as well as through the involvement of Highland-based contractors during the renovation process itself.

“Her commitment to the economic health of the local area will also be reflected in a range of initiatives, such as support for local organic farmers, a cause close to her heart.

“As an ardent supporter of wildlife conversation, Samantha has also pledged to engage with local charitable causes, which will align with her commitment to preserving the extensive forested estate surrounding the castle.”

Carbisdale Castle operated as a youth hostel for decades before lying vacant for several years during which time there was increasing concern over its dilapidated condition.

It was sold to a London-based investment company six years ago after the asking price was reduced to £900,000.

Owners the FCFM Group also said it was intended to restore the castle “to its former glory as a world class private residence".

In 2019 plans for a luxury spa and swimming pool were lodged with Highland Council.

But the castle was put back on the market in 2021 at an asking price of £1.5 million. It attracted international interest from private buyers, hoteliers and charitable organisations.

A potential purchaser was found but the deal fell through.

Agents Strutt and Parker put Carbisdale up for sale again in May this year at offers over £1.3 million and in July announced that a buyer had been found.

At the time the seller said the identity of the purchaser was being kept “under wraps” for the time being.
